Überblick / Overview
1. Internationale Regierungsorganisationen * International Governmental Organizations
The World Trade Organization (WTO):
http://www.wto.org
This site contains a wealth of information on the WTO. Under
"Resources",
you find texts of all WTO agreements plus most official documents
issues
by WTO Bodies. On the entry page, you also find some links to
preliminary
information on the organization. It is a good site for both beginning
and
advanced WTO researchers.
The United Nations Conference on
Trade and Development (UNCTAD): http://www.unctad.org
This organization focuses on trade concerns of developing countries.
The annual world investment reports - parts of which are available
online
- contain useful information on trade and investment matters.
The Organization for Economic
Co-operation
and Development (OECD): http://www.oecd.fr
The OECD, much like the World Bank, has done a lot of research on
international
trade issues. An intergovernmental forum of developed countries, it is
often at the origin of initiatives of international economic
regulation.
The International Bank for
Reconstruction
and Development (IBRD; also: The World Bank): http://www.worldbank.org
Although primarily designed to finance development projects and
developing
countries, the World Bank does a lot of research on trade issues.
Important
contributions to trade literature come from its international economics
research department. Many discussion papers and policy research reports
on trade issues are available online at their website.
The Trade and Development Center:
http://www.itd.org
The ITD is a joint venture of the World Bank and the WTO.
The International Trade Center
(ITC): http://www.intracen.org
The ITC is a joint venure of the WTO and UNCTAD
The International Monetary Fund
(IMF):
http://www.imf.org
Concerned mainly with international monetary issues, the IMF naturally
includes trade matters in its portfolio.
United Nations Economic Commission
for Europe (UN-ECE): http://www.unece.org
UN-ECE in Geneva has an excellent site with lots of statistical data
(and links to statistical offices around the globe). Their trade
commission
deals with lots of international trade issues, too
2. Nationale Handelsbehörden * National Trade Authorities
Commission
of the European Union (GD I):
http://www.europa.eu.int/comm/trade/index_en.htm
The "official" site to start research on EU trade policy
United States Trade Representatitve
(USTR): http://www.ustr.gov
The "official" site to start research on US trade policy.
Ministry of Economy,
Trade
and Industry, Japan (METI): http://www.meti.go.jp/english
The "official" site to start research on Japanese trade policy.
Department of Foreign
Affairs
and International Trade, Canada: http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca
The "official" site to start research on the trade policy of Canada
- the "smallest" member of the famous "Quad" which some say governs the
WTO.
Ministry of Commerce and
Industry,
India: http://commin.nic.in/doc/
The site of the trade ministry of India, one of the few vociferous
developing members of the WTO.
Ministério do
desenvolvimento
Indústria e Comércio Exterior, Brazil:
http://www.mdic.gov.br
Brazil is, together with India, a leading country for the promotion
of developing country interests in the WTO. This links brings you to
the
Brazilian Ministry on Industrial Delveopment and Foreign Trade.
3. Nichtregierungsorganisationen * Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)
There are probably thousands of NGOs today which deal at some stage with trade issues. The sites listed in this chapter are noteworthy both with regard to their quality and with regard to the organizations which have created them, as these organisations have a clear focus on trade issues. Moreover, the websites of these organizations contain links to other NGOs, and they also publish newsletters which help in keeping track of the WTO-NGO movement and its evolution.
International Center for Trade and
Sustainable Development (ICTSD): http://www.ictsd.org
Excellent site! Their monthly and weekly newsletters are characterised
by high quality: Fair reporting, the reliability of the resources used
and the high portion of analysis contained therein. A "must" for
everyone
interested in what others say.
WTO Watch - Global Information
Center on Trade and Sustainable Development (International Institute
for
Agriculture and Trade Policy; IATP): http://www.wtowatch.org
Another noteworthy site. Although their information is more biased
towards WTO criticism, it remains still a very valuable source of
information
on what goes on in the WTO. Their list of links to other NGOs couldn't
probably be more comprehensive.
4. Aktuelle WTO-Berichterstattung * WTO-News Coverage
Inside US Trade:
http://www.insidetrade.com
Site for up-to-date trade news. Unfortunately, you have to pay to
access
the service.
WTO Reporter:
http://www.bna.com/access/wto.html
Another excellent site for WTO news coverage. Unfortunately, this
service
requires payment, too.
Yahoo
News:
WTO and International Trade
Finally a freebie: Yahoo runs a news service with free up-to-date
information
in international trade.
WTO-News: http://www.wtonews.ch
Newsbrief published by the Swiss Institute for International Economics
and Applied Economic Research (SIAW-HSG) three times a year with
comments
on the most important developments in the WTO such as dispute
settlement,
negotiations or the general course of the WTO system.
5. Wichtige wissenschaftliche Zeitschriften * Important Academic Journals
Die folgende Liste enthält eine Auswahl
politikorientierter Wissenschaftszeitschriften zum Internationalen
Handel
und zur WTO:
The following list contains links to selected
policy-oriented academic journals on international trade and the WTO:
The Journal of
International
Economic Law: http://www.jiel.oupjournals.org
Oxford University Press, ISSN 1464-3758 (Online)
The JIEL was able to establish itself as the leading academic journal
for international trade law within only a couple of years. Each issue
is
full of "landmark" articles, often interdisciplinary in nature. My
personal
opinion is that you can't do serious academic research on the WTO
system
any more without regularly reading the JIEL. The Journal is available
both
in print and online.
Journal of World Trade:
http://www.kluwerlaw.com
Geneva: Kluwer Law / Werner Publishers, ISSN 1011-6702
The JWT is another journal which publishes a lot on WTO and other trade
issues.
World Competition - Law and
Economics
Review: http://www.kluwerlaw.com
London et al.: Kluwier, ISSN 1011-4548
The
World Economy
Oxford: Blackwell, ISSN 0378-5920
Although I could not find the homepage of "The World Economy" on the
web, this is another excellent academic source for policy-oriented
articles
on trade issues.
Aussenwirtschaft [The Swiss
Review
of International Economic Relations]: http://www.siaw.unisg.ch
Chur/Zürich: Rüegger, ISSN 0004-8216
Aussenwirtschaft is the classic policy-oriented journal on
international
trade in the German language area. Published for more than fifty years,
the journal features both articles with new research results and
synopses
of complex issues.
Intereconomics:
http://www.hwwa.uni-hamburg.de/Publikationen/Intereconomics
Baden-Baden: Nomos, 0020-5346
Published by the Hamburger Weltwirtschaftsarchiv, Interecononmics is
another journal focussing on international economic issues.
6. Individuelle Forscher und Forschungsinstitute * Individual researchers and research institutions
Paul R. Krugman:
http://www.mit.edu/~krugman
This site contains much of Paul Krugman's work, which is a pleasure
to read.
Jagdish N. Bhagwati:
http://www.columbia.edu/~jb38/
Professor Bhagwati's website currently contains an excellent volume
on challenges to the WTO system.
Schweizerisches Institut
für
Aussenwirtschaft und Angewandte Wirtschaftsforschung (SIAW):
http://www.siaw.unisg.ch
The Swiss Institute for international economics and applied economic
research is one of Switzerland's leading research institutions on
international
trade. Publications are increasingly available for download. From
spring
2001, the institute will run a special site for WTO research: http://www.wto-research.org
CATO Center
for
Trade Policy Studies: http://www.freetrade.org/issues/wto.html
If you don't have problems with a liberal stance on trade issues, try
this and you will be delighted.

Alexander Roitinger (http://www.roitinger.li)
7. Datenbanken, Suchmaschinen und Portale * Data Bases, Search Engines and Portals
Die folgende Liste enthält einige Links und Hinweise zu Datenbanken, Suchmaschinen und Portalen, welche ich bei der Suche nach WTO-relevanten Informationen als hilfreich empfunden habe:
The following list contains links to and information about some databases, search engines and portals which I find very helpful for WTO research:
The Global Trade
Negotiations
Home Page (KSG): http://www.ksg.harvard.edu/cid/cidtrade
This is an excellent site maintained by the Kennedy School of
Governments.
It has recently been revamped and it now offers much up-to-date
information,
besides many links to actors and research institutions in the WTO
environment
World Trade Law Net:
http://www.worldtradelaw.net/
This is a very helpful portal for all those in search of WTO related
information. Very recommendable!
WTO Research (SIAW-HSG):
http://www.wto-research.org
From spring 2002 on, WTO Research will contain provide selected and
commented links to WTO resources in the Web.
Hieros Gamos, Guide to
Glabal
Trade Law, http://www.hg.org/trade.html
HG describes itself as "The Comprehensive Law and Government Portal"
Lexmercatoria:
http://www.lexmercatoria.org
This link brings you to one of the best collections of legal material
on all areas of international economic activity. Try it out!
Cornell University:
gopher://gopher.law.cornell.edu
This site contains a huge amount of legal documents and commentaries
on international trade. The international law section can be reached at
gopher://gopher.law.cornell.edu:70/11/foreign
Institut
für Weltwirtschaft - Kiel:
http://www.uni-kiel.de:8080/IfW/zbw/econis.htm
This is Germany's most renowned research institution when it comes
to international trade. The data base "Econis", where this link is
directed,
allows you to search titles from their huge library on international
economic
affairs. It is thereofre a good starting point for literature
research.
Use of the data base is free of cost, although the data base is a
cornerstone
of the WISO data base service which is available only for payment.
WISO-Datenbank: http://www.gbi.de
The WISO (Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften) data base is a popular
data base in the German language area. It is used for literature search
in the fields of the economic and social sciences. A commercial
provider
(GBI) offers access to the data base from every desktop that is linked
to the internet, however only for a usage fee. If you want to avoid the
usage fee, ask in an university library: They will be likely to have
the
CD Rom version ready for use in their local intranet. International
users
will prefer to use ABI-Inform for their research (see entry below)
ABI-Inform:
http://global.umi.com/pqdweb
ABI-Inform is an excellent international data base for the search of
academic literature in all fields of the social sciences, including
economics
and management. The index covers more than 1.000 serial publication.
Much
as the WISO-Datenbank (see above), it can be accessed through the web
(against
payment) or free of charge in many university libraries.
Google: http://www.google.com
This is the best general search engine in the web which I know. Just
type in up to 10 words which describe the topic you're looking for and
you are likely to get many results which fit your search well. As this
search engine also includes PDF files, you will most probably end up
with
many high quality sources, too - e.g. discussion papers, policy reports
et cetera. A further advantage of Google is that it lists search
results
according to their relevance. Finally, Google saves all sites locally:
Thus, even long after a page has been deleted or moved to another
location,
you still can retrieve the version that is saved in the cache memory
(which
is much more of a pleasure than getting these odd 404s...)
Altavista:
http://www.altavista.com
I can also recommend the "Advanced" search option of Altavista. Its
particular strength are complex searches with long search strings that
include Boolean operators such as AND, OR, NEAR or AND NOT. It is
therefore
of most use in areas where there are lots of documents.
Yahoo: http://www.yahoo.com
Yahoo is the classical search engine. Whereas Google is my first
preference
for most searches (for the inclusion of academic PDF files) and whereas
Altavista is my favourite for searches which include Boolean operators,
I can recommend Yahoo for searches using categories. Their share price
may be down, but the search engine still works fine...
The
Global Trade Negotiations Home Page (KSG):
http://www.ksg.harvard.edu/cid/cidtrade/links.html
This is an excellent site maintained by the Kennedy School of
Governments.
It has recently been revamped and it now offers much up-to-date
information,
besides many links to actors and research institutions in the WTO
environment
